Chapter 6: The Struggles
On the side of the Neehorsh peak, Mivraa began her morning ritual. The cycle of torment would start again just as it had for so many dawns. Each night, flying monsters, called ranqels, landed to feast upon the chained demigoddess. They tore at her naked flesh, ripping off hunks for their meal like vensars upon carrion. The flying winged creatures with their ugly beaked heads were created from the condemned souls of the worst humans. Released from the underworld, several of the long, lean skeletal monsters, covered with black leather-like skin, dined on the living woman. As a half-god, Mivraa could not die from such dreadful wounds. Instead, she endured the pain and agony of near death. After the monsters finished, Mivraa was left lying in the dirt trying to keep from going insane. Her arms and legs nearly devoid of flesh, she could only cry out to the lonely wind begging for death.
In her foggy, nearly unconscious state each morning, Mivraa heard two Death Bearers climbing the treacherous trail to bath her in Exyts Spring water. The spring water of the gods immediately began to heal the womanâs missing flesh and raw muscle. It was same healing waters she used on her friendâs injuries. The man and woman, dressed in black robes and wearing starched white turbans, stoically observed the enchanted magic work. The cult members proudly wore the black flag of death around their necks and remained oblivious to her suffering or her mutilated body. No matter how she begged to kill her, they would only smile before they forced her to drink the spring water. As it reformed her body to whole again, the water would satiate her hunger and thirst a short time. By nightfall, the pain of starvation would creep back. As if the nightly suffering was not enough, the heat of the afternoon brought the burning of the sun on her pale skin along with the constant bites of tantus, small six-legged insects that swarmed from the nearby rocks.
At first, her spirit remained strong as the goddess focused her efforts on escape. It was soon clear that the chains and bindings were impervious to her strength. As the reoccurring sunrises and sunsets stretched together, Mivraa tried everything to get help from the Death Bearers when they arrived, even chanting prayers to their god, Kriell. While it was a name she did not know, Mivraa hoped her captors might release her.
Eventually, Mivraa turned to cursing cruel god. She changed her strategy. One of her strengths was the ability to see visions of others. Now she attempted to focus on communicating her terrible nights into visions for her friends to find her.
Some of the time she was able to concentrate on her memories, like Urithâs scarred face and gray eyes, which somehow reassured her that he would find her eventually. She also saw Fedelm and Oslaf in her dreams. Strangely, she would have dreams showing other faces, people she knew such as Dughorm or Caestia as well as others she did not know.
